South Korea Bitcoin Ban - Is It A Good Thing?

South Korean investors are upset by the recent ban on cryptocurrency trading. The country has an extensive crypto market but cryptocurrency trading isn't yet legalized. Kim Dong-Yu, vice chairman of the government, reiterated that digital coins are not recognized as currencies or financial products and said it can't guarantee their value. Financial authorities in the country have been debating comprehensive regulations to curb illegal activities, including a ban on all initial coin offerings (ICOs).

The new law will prohibit all foreigners from trading cryptocurrencies in Korea. This includes both residents and non-residents. It also applies to "kyopo", or ethnic Koreans who have foreign citizenship. Nonresidents and minors are also prohibited from trading in crypto. The 'big four' exchanges, the three largest, are under risk assessment by three government-owned banks. The ban will apply to smaller exchanges.

Although South Korea has stated that it will not ban cryptocurrency, it is unlikely that the ban will be implemented immediately. The president's office states that to make the move take effect, it must be approved in majority by 297 members. The approval process could be lengthy, sometimes even several years. Nevertheless, it is a positive sign for the future of the crypto industry in South Korea. The government has not yet revealed their plans for the industry.

Despite the South Korean cryptocurrency ban recently, the industry has been booming. The regulator of South Korea stated that the bubble would burst eventually. Cedric Jeanson (CEO of BitSpread), a bitcoin trading firm, believes that the new regulation was a positive step. He argued the new regulation is a positive step by BitSpread's CEO Cedric Jeanson. The country's financial regulators need to monitor and regulate ICOs to protect their investors. Although the South Korean government is unlikely to harm its economy, he hopes to protect its consumers.

It is important to understand the reasons South Korea has banned cryptocurrency. The regulators of South Korea have expressed concerns about crypto investments and warned that they pose risks. The government also wants a lower risk of fraud and scams. Therefore, regulators in the country have banned both domestic initial coin offerings (ICOs) and cryptocurrency exchanges.

The ban is not necessarily a positive thing for the industry. The possibility of monopolies arising from the closure of half of South Korea’s crypto exchanges could make it easier for ordinary investors to lose out. The ban is only temporary. For now, there is no legal basis for it. Not only is the ban illegal, but the latest guidelines by the South Korean government are unclear about how to enforce it.
